The Sólheimajökull Ice Climbing & Glacier Hike is one of Iceland’s most thrilling adventures, combining spectacular glacier landscapes with hands-on climbing. Located on the stunning south coast, this experience allows you to explore the dramatic ice formations of Sólheimajökull while learning climbing techniques from expert guides.
This is a meet-on-location tour at the Sólheimajökull parking lot. Arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled time to meet your guides and prepare for your adventure. After gearing up with crampons, helmets, and ice axes, you’ll enjoy a 30-minute scenic walk to the edge of the glacier. This short hike not only gets your blood flowing but also highlights how the glacier has receded in recent years due to climate change.
On the ice, you’ll marvel at crevasses, shimmering blue walls, and deep moulins leading into the heart of the glacier. Your guide will share insights into the geology, the impact of warming temperatures, and the glacier’s connection to the powerful Katla volcano. On clear days, you might even spot Eyjafjallajökull in the distance.
Don’t worry if you’re new to climbing — the Sólheimajökull Ice Climbing & Glacier Hike is designed for beginners and experienced adventurers alike. Your guides will teach you essential ice climbing skills, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. With professional equipment and expert instruction, you’ll feel confident as you ascend the glacier’s icy walls.
