This day tour takes you to explore the Snæfellsnes National Park, where you will visit various sites and fantastic landscapes. After being picked up from your accommodation, you are swept off to the west! You visit a black pebble beach, see beautiful waterfalls, and more! On clear days, you can see the majestic volcano with its crown of ice, the glacier of Snæfellsjökull from Reykjavik! The glacier is known to have inspired Jules Verne in the writing of his famous novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth.”
Explore Snæfellsnes Peninsula: Arnastapi and Hellnar
Ytri-Tunga is the first stop on the tour. It is a charming farm with a nearby beach that is a popular seals gathering spot. You might be lucky enough to see a few enjoying the sunshine and resting on the shore!
Then you visit Arnarstapi and Hellnar, located in a lovely coastal area with a natural harbor. Rock formations with spotted with green-and-yellow moss spotted beautifully decorate the coastline. Take a stroll along the cliffs to enjoy the refreshing sea air.
Black pebble beach and waterfalls
A little further along are two popular sites: Lóndrangar, two tall black basalt columns marking the coast, and Djúpalónssandur, a gorgeous black pebble beach. It is there where once upon a time, sailors and fishermen were selected upon their strength and merit. They faced each other in a lifting stones competition and wood logs throwing, and you can still see the stones on the beach!
The heaviest stone, Fullsterkur (“Full-Strength”), weighs up to 154 kg (340 lbs). Be sure to lift your knees, so you don’t hurt your back on this one! Hálfsterkur (“Half-Strength”) weighs 100 kg (220 lbs), and Hálfdrættingur (“Weakling”) weighs 54 kg (119 lbs). If anyone could have only lifted Amlóði (“Useless”), his reputation was not the brightest in the village as the stone only weighs 23 kg (50 lbs).
If a fisherman wanted to earn a spot on the fishing boat, he had to be able to lift the “Hálfdrættingur” stone – anything less was not satisfying.
Church Mountain
Your last visit to Snæfellsnes National Park is at the landmark and most photographed site, Kirkjufell mountain (“Church Mountain”), and its waterfall, Kirkjufellsfoss. Be sure to get a picture for your collection!
