Do I need to book Iceland tours in advance?

Yes, especially between June and August and around the winter holidays, when popular tours like the Golden Circle and glacier hikes can sell out days or weeks ahead. Booking early also usually gets you the best price and the widest choice of time slots.

Why book through Iceland Adventure Tours instead of directly with a tour operator?

We hand\-pick and compare tours from Iceland’s most experienced local operators, so you get one trusted place to browse, compare, and book — at the same price you’d pay booking directly. Booking everything with us also makes changing your mind easy: if you’d rather do a different tour, you don’t have to cancel it yourself and wait for a refund — just let us know, and we’ll cancel and rebook you on the new tour directly, as long as it’s within that tour’s cancellation window.

What should I wear on a glacier hike or ice cave tour?

Warm, waterproof layers, sturdy waterproof boots, and gloves are essential year\-round, since Icelandic weather changes fast. Most operators provide technical gear like crampons and helmets, but check your specific tour’s packing list in your booking confirmation.

What are my chances of seeing the Northern Lights?

They’re best viewed from late August through mid\-April, on clear, dark nights away from city lights. Sightings depend on solar activity and weather, so no tour operator can guarantee them — most Northern Lights tours offer a free rebooking if nothing is visible.

Is it customary to tip guides in Iceland?

Tipping isn’t expected in Iceland the way it is in the US — guides are paid a fair wage, and prices already reflect that. That said, a tip is always appreciated for exceptional service.

What's your cancellation policy?

Most tours can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24–48 hours before departure; the exact window is shown at checkout for each tour. Tours cancelled by the operator due to weather are always fully refunded or rescheduled.

Which side of the road do you drive on in Iceland, and do I need a 4x4?

Iceland drives on the right, same as the US. A 4×4 isn’t required for the Ring Road or Golden Circle in summer, but is strongly recommended — and sometimes legally required — for F\-roads in the highlands or winter travel.

Do I need a SIM card, or will my phone work in Iceland?

Most US phone plans charge steep international rates, so many travelers buy a local prepaid SIM at Keflavík airport or an eSIM before arrival. Wifi is widely available at hotels, cafés, and on most tour buses.

What languages do the guides speak?

All our partner guides speak fluent English, and many tours also offer German, French, or Spanish\-speaking guides on request — just let us know when booking if you need a specific language.

How far in advance should I book a multi\-day Ring Road package?

For summer (June–August), 2–3 months ahead is ideal, since accommodation along the route sells out first. Winter packages can usually be booked a few weeks out, though Northern Lights\-focused trips fill up around the holidays.

Do US citizens need a visa to visit Iceland?

No — Iceland is part of the Schengen Area, so US citizens can visit visa\-free for up to 90 days within a 180\-day period with a valid passport.

What type of power outlets does Iceland use?

Iceland runs on 230V/50Hz with European round two\-pin plugs (type F), different from the US. Bring a travel adapter, and check that any high\-wattage devices (like hair dryers) are dual\-voltage or you’ll also need a converter.
