We’re Sigrún and Valgeir, the husband-and-wife team behind Iceland Adventure Tours. We founded the company in 2014, and what began as a small family business has grown into an Icelandic tour company built on more than a decade of first-hand experience in Iceland’s tourism industry.
Our story began during the winter of 2014. I had lost my job, Valgeir had become deeply unhappy in his, and with our two-year-old son at home, we found ourselves at a crossroads. Instead of looking for new jobs, we decided to take a chance and build something of our own.
In the early years, we didn’t simply sell tours — we operated them ourselves.
Valgeir worked as a guide, and together with a small team we ran diving and snorkeling tours at Silfra and other locations in Iceland. Those years gave us first-hand experience of what goes into creating a great tour: knowledgeable guides, safety, reliable operations, good communication and, above all, taking care of the people who have trusted you with part of their Iceland adventure.
In 2018, we decided to take Iceland Adventure Tours in a new direction. Rather than operating the tours ourselves, we began focusing on connecting travelers with experienced local tour operators and guides throughout Iceland.
Today, we use the experience we’ve gained since 2014 to carefully select the tours and activities we offer.
We’re not a huge international booking platform. Iceland Adventure Tours is still the family business we started in 2014.
We live in Iceland, know the country and its tourism industry, and have experienced tour operations from the inside. That matters when we’re deciding which experiences to offer our customers.
Our goal isn’t simply to list as many tours as possible. We want to make it easier for travelers to find memorable experiences with established local operators — whether you’re looking for a Northern Lights tour, exploring the Golden Circle, walking on a glacier, visiting an ice cave or discovering parts of Iceland beyond Reykjavík.
And because we’ve worked on the operational side of tourism ourselves, we understand that the experience doesn’t begin when you step onto a bus or meet your guide. It begins when you’re planning your trip and deciding who to trust.
A lot has changed since we started Iceland Adventure Tours in 2014.
We’ve seen Icelandic tourism grow rapidly, experienced major changes in international travel, lived through the COVID-19 pandemic and watched new destinations and experiences emerge around the country.
Through all of those changes, we’re still here.
What hasn’t changed is the reason we started: we wanted to build our own Icelandic family business and give travelers experiences in Iceland that we would feel comfortable recommending ourselves.
Today, Iceland Adventure Tours brings together carefully selected experiences from local operators across Iceland, while remaining independently owned and family-run.
Planning a trip to Iceland can be overwhelming. Weather changes quickly, driving conditions vary by season, tours depart from different locations and there are often several ways to experience the same part of the country.
