Looking for an unforgettable adventure in North Iceland? The RIB Whale Watching and Puffin Tour in Húsavík offers the perfect combination of speed, excitement, and wildlife encounters. Departing from the picturesque harbor of Húsavík, often called the whale-watching capital of Iceland, this tour takes you on a thrilling journey across Skjálfandi Bay.
Your adventure begins with a visit to Puffin Island*, home to one of the largest puffin colonies in Iceland. While stepping ashore is not allowed, your captain will stop the RIB boat close to the island so you can admire hundreds of puffins flying, nesting, and diving for food. Your knowledgeable guide will share fascinating facts about these colorful seabirds, making this stop both educational and magical. The sight of puffins swooping gracefully over the ocean is an experience you won’t forget.
From there, the tour continues further into Skjálfandi Bay, an area renowned for its incredible whale sightings. On a powerful RIB boat, you can get impressively close to some of the world’s most majestic marine mammals. Commonly spotted species include Humpback whales, Minke whales, and even the mighty Blue whale. The smaller, agile vessel allows for an intimate experience with these gentle giants, bringing you closer to the action than traditional boats.
This tour is ideal for travelers seeking both adventure and breathtaking natural encounters. With Húsavík’s stunning coastal scenery, diverse marine life, and the excitement of a RIB boat ride, it’s the perfect way to explore Iceland’s north coast.
*Please note: The puffin season runs from April 15th to August 20th. Outside of this period, the focus of the tour is solely on whale watching.

As whales are wild animals, a sighting of them can never be guaranteed. However, this area offers an excellent chance of a sighting and whales are seen on most tours.
In the unlikely event that you do not see whales on your tour, you will be offered a chance to go on a regular whale watching tour (not a RIB tour) with the same company free of charge.
In this area, Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, and Blue Whales are spotted regularly. Many other species of whales are sighted here as well, although they may not make regular appearances. These include for example Sperm Whales, Fin Whales, Pilot Whales, Sei Whales and more.
The puffin season is from about April 15th – August 20th. During that time you will see puffins on this tour.
After August 20th the tour focuses on whales, as the puffins leave the area around this time.
