Your adventure to the Westman Islands begins with pickup from your preferred location in Reykjavik. Once everyone is on board, we will drive to the Landeyjahöfn Ferry Terminal. From there, we will board the Herjólfur ferry and enjoy a scenic 30–45 minute ride to Vestmannaeyjar Island.
Upon arrival, we will start the tour at the famous Elephant Rock (Halldórsskora). Lava from the Eldfell eruption formed this impressive basalt rock. In addition, its unique shape resembles an elephant dipping its trunk into the sea, making it a popular photo stop.
Next, we will continue to Stórhöfði Cape for puffin watching. Not only does this area offer beautiful coastal views, but it also provides excellent opportunities to photograph these charming seabirds.
Afterward, we will visit the Eldheimar Museum, often called the “Pompeii of the North.” Here, you can explore the story of the 1973 volcanic eruption and discover how it changed the island forever.
Following the museum visit, we will head downtown for lunch. Although lunch is not included in the tour price, you will find several great local restaurants nearby.
In the afternoon, we will visit Skansinn near the harbor area. This historic location once protected the island with a fortress. Furthermore, you will see the beautiful Stafkirkjan, a traditional Norse wooden church gifted from Norway. You can also enjoy views of the lighthouse and the dramatic sea cliffs.
Next, we will hike up Mt. Eldfell Volcano, which last erupted in 1973. From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the lava fields, the colorful town, and the surrounding islands. Moreover, the hike gives you a chance to experience Iceland’s volcanic landscape up close.
After the hike, you will have free time to stroll through the town or explore the lava fields before returning to the harbor.
Finally, we will meet at the harbor in the late afternoon and take the ferry back to the mainland. Once we arrive, we will drive back to Reykjavik and drop you off in the evening.
Please wear warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy hiking shoes for a comfortable experience.
