The Sólheimasandur Black Sand & Green Canyon ATV Tour

The Sólheimasandur Black Sand & Green Canyon ATV Tour lets you ride ATVs to the DC-3 Plane Wreck. This is the easiest way to visit this famous sight in Iceland! On this two-hour tour, you will ride through this black sand desert, surrounded by a dramatic and diverse landscape. This tour is a great excursion on a self-drive holiday on the South Coast.

On this tour, you will meet up with your expert guides on location at the base in South Iceland. After suiting up in warm overalls and safety gear, you will start your journey. You’ll ride on the black lava sands derived from the Katla volcano’s past glacial outbursts. You can experience incredible views of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier from the black beach. You can also get a great idea of the Dyrhólaey peninsula.

After a picture-perfect stop, you’ll continue to the DC-3 plane wreck. This US Navy plane ran out of fuel and crashed in 1973. The plane wreckage has since become a popular tourist destination in Iceland, even featuring in some popular music videos. After visiting the plane wreck, you will continue to the river Jökulsá and up to the foot of a mountain. You will enter a beautiful green canyon where you’ll stop for photos. Along the way, you will also do some thrilling river crossings. From there, you’ll ride along the mountain back to the base.

This tour is suitable for beginners. Kids from 5 years and up can ride on ATVs with their parents, making this an excellent tour for families, groups, and individual travelers.

Please note that you must hold a valid driver’s license to drive an ATV. Those without permits can ride on in the back with their licensed travel partners. Please see this tour’s FAQ for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have a valid drivers license to drive an ATV?

Yes, you must have a valid driving license and be at least 18 years of age to operate the ATV.

If you do not have a valid license, you can ride in the back of the ATV of your licensed travel partner. Kids also ride on the back of their parents’ ATV’s, who must hold a valid license.

What is the difference between a double ride and a single ride?

The standard price for the tour includes a double ride, which means that two persons ride together on one ATV.

If you would like to ride the ATV by yourself, you can book a single ride at an additional cost.

Note that ATV’s are not shared with other guests on the tour, so if you are traveling by yourself or in a group with odd numbers, such as 3 or 5, you must book a single ride for one person.
