The Reykjavík Whale Watching tour takes you on an adventure at sea from Reykjavík harbor! On this 3-hour tour, you will sail out on Faxaflói Bay and nearby areas, looking for whales in their natural habitat. Species spotted in this area include minke whales, humpback whales, pilot whales, and more. The comfortable boat offers viewing platforms, an onboard saloon, and free Wi-Fi. The tour is led by experienced guides, who will tell you more about the whales in the area and answer any questions.
Departing from the Old Harbor in Reykjavík, your ticket includes access to the Visitor Centre, where you can learn more about the whales in the area before or after your tour. After meeting up with the crew, you’ll sail to sea looking for whales.
In the summer season (1 April – 31 October), the wildlife in the bay is at its highest peak. During this season, the Minke whales are at their most abundant, along with white-beaked dolphins. Humpback whales and Harbour porpoises are also often spotted during this season.
The winter season (1 November – 31 March) offers a different experience than the summer. During this season, the wildlife varies from year to year, with each year bringing different sightings. In the wintertime, you can also enjoy the low-lying sun, which casts a warm glow over the mountains surrounding the bay.
Please note: due to the unpredictable weather in Iceland, the operator reserves the right to alter routes and itineraries as needed. This may include sailing from other harbors in the nearby area. Please read our FAQ section for more information.
If traveling from November to February, please select the Reykjavík Winter Whale & Dolphin Watching option.

Yes, a whale watching tour is a great activity that the whole family can enjoy. There is no age limit on this tour.
You should wear warm clothes as your first layer, and we recommend bringing a waterproof outer layer in case of rain. Keep in mind that it can get colder out at sea than it is on land.
Several layers of clothes are recommended along with gloves, a scarf, hat and winter shoes.
Warm overalls are provided on the boat (included in the tour price)
No, lunch and refreshments are not included in this tour.
No, smoking is not allowed on the boat.
The whale watching tours are focused mainly on the southern part of Faxaflói bay, just off Reykjavík. Each day the crew scans the area for signs of whales as they never know for sure where they might find them. Sometimes they have to go far while at other times the whales are quite close to the shore.
On some occasions (mainly in winter), when weather conditions or chances of spotting whales are greater elsewhere than the regular area in Faxaflói, the tour will depart from nearby harbors like Hafnarfjörður, Keflavík, Sandgerði or Grindavík making the tours last anywhere from 3-5 hrs.
If the operator decides to cancel the tour because of weather, you will be offered to reschedule your tour or get a full refund.
As these are wild animals, sightings can never be guaranteed.
If no whales or dolphins make an appearance on your tour you will be offered complimentary tickets for another tour, valid for 2 years.
As the whales are wild animals there is no way to predict if it’s more likely to see them in the morning or in the afternoon.
Reservations can be canceled 24 hours prior to departure without penalty. Cancellations received less than 24 hours prior to departure are non-refundable.
Cancellations must be submitted in writing to info@iat.is.
Please be mindful of possible time zone differences. Iceland is in the GMT time zone and cancellations must be submitted at least 24 hours before departure in Icelandic local time (GMT).
