The Reykjavík Express Whale Watching Tour

On the Reykjavík Express Whale Watching tour, you go on an exciting ride on the Faxaflói Bay! This tour is the perfect addition to a great day in Reykjavík. Head out to sea with an experienced captain and search for whales in their natural environment. This fun ride lets you see Reykjavík from a different perspective, viewing the Harpa music hall and more from the oceanside. Departing from the Old Harbor in Reykjavík, your ticket includes access to the Visitor Centre, where you can learn more about the whales in the area before or after your tour.

On this tour, you ride a RIB boat that seats a maximum of 12 guests per tour. Your RIB boat captain will take you to sea, where you’ll explore Faxaflói Bay. During the summer season, from April to October,  the wildlife in the bay is at its highest peak. Common sightings in this area include Minke whales and white-beaked dolphins. Humpback whales and Harbour porpoises are also often spotted in the bay.

Please note that due to the unpredictable weather in Iceland, the operator reserves the right to alter routes and itineraries as needed. This may include sailing from other harbors in the nearby area.

If traveling from November to February, please select the Reykjavík Winter Whale & Dolphin Watching option.

During Puffin season, May 15th – August 15th, the tour will stop by the islands in the bay, where you can see puffins in their natural environment.

This tour may not be suitable for everyone. Please read our FAQ section for more information.

What happens if the boat can not depart from Reykjavík?

The whale watching tours are focused mainly on the southern part of Faxaflói bay, just off Reykjavík. Each day the crew scans the area for signs of whales as they never know for sure where they might find them. Sometimes they have to go far while at other times the whales are quite close to the shore.

On some occasions (mainly in winter), when weather conditions or chances of spotting whales are greater elsewhere than the regular area in Faxaflói, the tour will depart from nearby harbors like Hafnarfjörður, Keflavík, Sandgerði or Grindavík making the tours last anywhere from 3-5 hrs.

What happens if my tour is canceled due to weather?

If the operator decides to cancel the tour because of weather, you will be offered to reschedule your tour or get a full refund.

As these are wild animals, sightings can never be guaranteed.

If no whales or dolphins make an appearance on your tour you will be offered complimentary tickets for a regular Whale Watching Tour, valid for 2 years.
