Garður is approximately one hour from Reykjavík and offers fascinating marine life, colourful algae and underwater kelp forests. The experience includes one guided ocean dive of approximately 40 minutes, depending on conditions.
This approximately 3-hour diving experience is designed for certified divers with recent drysuit diving experience.
Dive Among Kelp Forests and Marine Life
Enter the North Atlantic from the shore and explore the underwater environment around Garður.
Kelp forests provide habitat for a variety of marine species. During the dive, you may encounter lumpsuckers, nudibranchs, flounders and other invertebrates. Colourful algae and soft coral also add colour to the underwater landscape.
If you are lucky, you may even encounter a wolffish among the rocks. Marine wildlife is wild and sightings can never be guaranteed.
A Guided North Atlantic Dive
Your professional guide leads the approximately 40-minute shore dive, while all necessary diving equipment is provided.
The timing of the experience depends on the ocean tides. The operator generally plans the dive so that it finishes around high tide. Therefore, the exact starting time can vary.
After your dive, warm up with hot chocolate and cookies.
Weather and Alternative Dive Sites
Ocean diving in Iceland depends heavily on weather and sea conditions. If conditions at Garður are unsuitable, the planned ocean dive may need to change.
When possible, the operator may offer an alternative dive site instead. Possible alternatives include Akranes, Bjarnagjá, Kleifarvatn, Davíðsgjá or Silfra, depending on conditions and availability.

Diver Requirements
To participate, you must:
- Hold a PADI Open Water Diver certification or equivalent
- Have a drysuit diving certification and at least one logged drysuit dive within the two years before the tour OR
- Have at least 10 logged drysuit dives within the previous two years and provide written confirmation from a diving instructor
- Be physically fit
- Be able to communicate in English
- Be comfortable wearing a tight and sometimes restrictive drysuit
- Be between 150–200 cm tall
- Weigh between 45–120 kg
- Fit within the operator’s available drysuit sizes
- Complete and follow the required Diving Medical Statement
- Have the medical form signed by a doctor if you are 60 years or older
- Sign the liability release form before diving
- Not be pregnant
What to Bring
- SCUBA certification card – PADI Open Water or equivalent
- Proof of required drysuit certification or recent drysuit experience
- Long thermal underwear
- Thick, warm socks
- Warm clothing suitable for the weather
- Hat, gloves and scarf
- Contact lenses if you normally wear glasses, or your own prescription diving mask
