4-Day Þórsmörk Guided Hiking Tour

Experience the wild beauty of Iceland’s Highlands on this 4-day guided Þórsmörk hiking tour. Explore deep valleys, volcanic landscapes, moss-covered mountains and spectacular glacier views.

Þórsmörk, also known as Thorsmork, lies between three glaciers: Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull. Icelanders know the valley as a hiking paradise. Its remarkable landscape offers mountain trails, canyons, rivers, lava fields and sweeping glacier views.

Over four days, you will hike around 40 kilometres. Most days involve 4–7 hours of walking. Therefore, this adventure suits active travellers who feel comfortable with moderate to challenging mountain hikes.

Hike Through the Þórsmörk Valley

Your experienced guide will lead you through some of Þórsmörk’s most beautiful landscapes. Along the way, you will discover valleys, volcanic formations, mountain ridges and viewpoints.

You will also explore trails that reveal a quieter side of the Icelandic Highlands. Meanwhile, your guide will help you navigate the terrain and share local knowledge about the area.

Because Þórsmörk offers so many different landscapes in a relatively small area, every hiking day brings something new.

Discover Fimmvörðuháls and Volcanic Landscapes

One of the biggest highlights is the challenging hike towards Fimmvörðuháls. First, you climb through dramatic mountain terrain towards the Morinsheiði plateau.

Then, the landscape begins to reveal the effects of Iceland’s volcanic activity. You will reach the lava field from the 2010 Fimmvörðuháls eruption and see the craters Magni and Móði.

The longest hiking day includes around 1,000 metres of ascent and descent. However, the effort rewards you with remarkable views across Þórsmörk, its mountains and surrounding glaciers.

Stay in a Mountain Hut in Þórsmörk

For three nights, Básar Hut becomes your base in the valley. You will sleep in shared dormitory accommodation and use a sleeping bag.

Staying inside Þórsmörk gives you direct access to the hiking trails each morning. Moreover, you can experience the peaceful Highland surroundings after a full day on the trail.

The tour includes three breakfasts, four lunches and three dinners. You will also enjoy a celebratory barbecue with the group during your stay.

Explore Iceland with an Experienced Hiking Guide

Þórsmörk is remote, rugged and full of incredible hiking routes. An experienced and qualified guide leads the group throughout this four-day adventure.

Transport between Reykjavík and Þórsmörk is also included. As a result, you do not need to arrange your own Highland transportation.

For active travellers looking for a multi-day guided hiking tour in Iceland, this adventure offers an exceptional combination. You can experience Þórsmörk, Fimmvörðuháls, volcanic landscapes, glaciers and mountain-hut life on one journey.
