The Inside the Volcano tour is a true bucket list adventure in Iceland. On this unique volcano tour, you will literally go inside the dormant Þríhnjúkagígur volcano. Located just a short drive away from Reykjavík, this tour is the perfect addition to a great day in the city. The tour includes pick-up in Reykjavík and transport to the base camp for the tour.  If you have a rental car, you can also meet at the base camp and enjoy this tour on your way in or out of Reykjavík.

After arrival at the Inside the Volcano base camp, you will suit up with safety equipment. You will also get a safety briefing from your guide. Afterward, you will start the hike up to the Þríhnjúkagígur volcano (approx. 3 km). The path is mostly even terrain, although there are some elevation and uneven parts along the way. After about 45-50 minutes, you will arrive at the base of the Þríhnjúkagígur volcano! The last part of the hike is the most challenging, as you hike up to the mouth of the crater. Here the elevation is about 100m/350 ft. Your efforts will be rewarded with a fantastic experience as you enter the open elevator system that lowers you 120 meters into the volcano! 

The ride down is part of the trill of the tour and provides you with a stunning view of your surroundings. As you enter the volcano, you will feel like another world. The Lofthellir Ice Cave and Lava Tube Tour takes you on a journey of the volcanic underworld of the Lake Mývatn area. Lofthellir is a permafrost ice cave and lava tube. There you can see incredible ice formations, some hundreds of years old.

After meeting up with your guide by Lake Mývatn, you will drive along rugged tracks towards Lofthellir. You will go past the Mt. Hverfjall volcano along the Lúdentarborgir crater row. The drive takes you to Mt. Hvannfell, where you will start a 30-minute hike across the lava fields. During the hike, your guide will tell you more about the area and its unique geology. Once you reach the Lofthellir cave, you will gear up in safety equipment. You’ll also get a headlamp and studded boots to walk around more comfortably inside the ice cave.

Once inside the cave, you will travel slowly in a single line with your guide. He will guide you through the cave and help you move around safely. The entrance is the narrowest point of the cave, and you will need to crawl through here. The cave is 370 meters long, and as you get deeper into it, the cave gets bigger. Once you have entered Lofthellir, you will go on a journey of fire and ice. You will see unique ice sculptures and get plenty of time to take some fantastic photos. You will also learn more about the cave and its environment.

This wonderful Jökulsarlon Ice Cave tour will let you see one of the most spectacular Iceland ice caves to date!

The Crystal Ice Cave Iceland tour departs from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, located 379km from Reykjavik, at least 4.5 hours drive from Reykjavik in best conditions. Staying close to the glacier lagoon for one night, before or after visiting the ice cave, is not a bad idea. Please follow weather and road conditions before you take off – the weather can be very different just outside the city.

We will pick you up at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in a super jeep and drive to the edge of the glacier, where we will gear up and get ready for the caving. After a short hike (approx. 20-30 mins), we’ll arrive at the magnificent ice cave, where you will explore its wonders at your own pace.

Ice caves begin to take shape in autumn each year and last throughout the winter. Caves can be found in several locations on the south side of Vatnajökull. These trips are somewhat temperature dependent as ice caves must be treated with the utmost respect regarding the supportive ceiling, along with other factors that your specialized guide constantly evaluates. You will have the chance to visit one of them during this trip and to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Please wear warm clothes and waterproof layers. It’s always good to have some snacks with you and a bottle of water. Hiking shoes are mandatory!

You will be wearing a helmet, so a smaller hat is recommended for it to fit underneath the helmet.
