Secret Lagoon – Iceland’s Oldest Natural Pool

The Secret Lagoon (known locally as Gamla Laugin) is Iceland’s oldest swimming pool, built in 1891 in the geothermal area of Hverahólmi near the village of Flúðir. This hidden gem offers visitors a chance to soak in history while enjoying a truly authentic geothermal bathing experience.

Natural Hot Springs and Geothermal Activity

What makes the Secret Lagoon unique is its natural geothermal water supply. Hot springs such as Vaðmálahver, Básahver, and Litli Geysir provide 100% of the pool’s water. Litli Geysir, a small but active geyser, erupts every few minutes, creating a natural spectacle for guests. The water flows continuously, taking only 24 hours to fully renew itself, ensuring a clean and fresh environment at all times.

Relaxing All Year Round

The water temperature remains a comfortable 38–40°C (100–104°F) throughout the year. Rich in natural minerals, including sulfur, the warm water is known for its soothing and healing properties. Whether you visit in the bright midnight sun of summer or under the northern lights in winter, the Secret Lagoon offers a magical setting to relax and unwind.

Authentic Icelandic Experience

The Secret Lagoon has been carefully preserved to maintain its simple and natural charm. Visitors can enjoy modern facilities built next to the pool, including traditional Icelandic showers separated for men and women. For refreshments, the on-site Bistro offers light snacks and drinks, making it a perfect stop on your Golden Circle tour. Please note that hot meals are not served.

A Must-Visit in Iceland

With its rich history, natural beauty, and geothermal wonders, the Secret Lagoon is more than just a pool—it is an unforgettable experience. It is the ideal place to enjoy Iceland’s geothermal culture in a relaxed, authentic, and timeless setting.
