5-Day Iceland Winter Adventure: Golden Circle, South Coast, Ice Cave & Northern Lights Itinerary

Experience the very best of Iceland in winter on this unforgettable 5-day adventure. Explore Reykjavík, visit the famous Golden Circle, discover black sand beaches, hike a glacier, explore a spectacular natural ice cave, and enjoy two opportunities to see the magical Northern Lights.

Day 1 – Arrival in Reykjavík & Northern Lights Boat Tour

Welcome to Iceland! After arriving at Keflavík International Airport, make your way to Reykjavík and check in to your accommodation.

Spend the rest of the day exploring Iceland’s vibrant capital at your own pace. Stroll through the charming streets, visit local cafés, browse boutique shops, or discover landmarks such as Hallgrímskirkja Church, Harpa Concert Hall, and the Old Harbour.

In the evening, head out on a Northern Lights Boat Tour, offering a unique chance to witness the Aurora Borealis dancing across the night sky away from the city’s light pollution.

Day 2 – Golden Circle & South Coast Adventure

Today’s journey takes you through some of Iceland’s most iconic natural attractions.

Your first stop is Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Rich in history and geology, it is one of Iceland’s most significant landmarks.

Continue to the Geysir Geothermal Area, home to the famous Strokkur Geyser, which erupts approximately every 5–10 minutes, shooting boiling water high into the air.

Next, visit the spectacular Gullfoss Waterfall, one of Iceland’s most powerful and beautiful waterfalls.

The adventure continues along Iceland’s famous South Coast, where you’ll visit two breathtaking waterfalls:

  • Seljalandsfoss, where you can walk behind the cascading water (conditions permitting)
  • Skógafoss, an impressive 60-metre waterfall often accompanied by rainbows on sunny days

On clear days, you’ll also enjoy views of the famous Eyjafjallajökull Glacier and Volcano.

Your day ends in the picturesque coastal village of Vík, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 3 – Black Sand Beach, Jökulsárlón & Ice Cave Adventure

Begin the day at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, one of Iceland’s most famous natural attractions. Admire the dramatic basalt columns, powerful Atlantic waves, and the legendary Reynisdrangar Sea Stacks rising from the ocean.

Continue east through breathtaking landscapes to the stunning Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where enormous icebergs drift peacefully across the glacial waters.

Just across the road, visit Diamond Beach, where sparkling chunks of ice wash ashore, creating one of Iceland’s most photographed locations.

Later, experience one of Iceland’s greatest winter highlights—a guided Ice Cave Tour. Accompanied by certified glacier guides, you’ll safely explore the incredible blue ice formations hidden deep within one of Iceland’s glaciers.

Natural ice caves form only during the winter months, when freezing temperatures create these extraordinary frozen wonders.

Day 4 – Glacier Hike & Return to Reykjavík

Start the morning with an unforgettable glacier hiking adventure on Svínafellsjökull Glacier, one of Iceland’s most spectacular glacier outlets.

Your professional glacier guide will provide all necessary safety equipment, including crampons, helmets, and ice axes, before leading you across the glacier’s dramatic landscape of deep crevasses, ice ridges, and stunning blue formations.

After the hike, begin your scenic journey back to Reykjavík, making stops along the South Coast as conditions and time allow.

In the evening, enjoy another opportunity to hunt for the Northern Lights on a comfortable Northern Lights Minibus Tour, maximizing your chances of witnessing this incredible natural phenomenon.

Day 5 – Reykjavík at Your Leisure & Departure

After checking out of your accommodation, enjoy some free time to explore Reykjavík before your onward journey.

Visit museums, relax in local cafés, shop for Icelandic souvenirs, or simply enjoy the atmosphere of the world’s northernmost capital before heading to the airport.

Important Information

Your safety is always our highest priority.

As natural ice caves are constantly changing, weather and glacier conditions may occasionally make access to certain caves unsafe or impossible.

During winter, our preferred destination is the spectacular Crystal Ice Cave. If conditions do not allow safe access, we’ll visit another carefully selected natural ice cave.

During the summer season (April to October), when natural ice caves are not accessible, you’ll visit the Ice Cave Under the Volcano. If weather conditions prevent access, the activity will be replaced with a guided glacier hike.
