This adventure provides all the necessary equipment to ensure your comfort and safety while you immerse yourself in a unique ice climbing experience on the stunning Sólheimajökull glacier.
Tour Details:
This is a meet-at-the-location tour! Please refer to the “How to Get There” section for directions. Arrive at the Sólheimajökull parking lot 20 minutes before your scheduled tour time to meet your guides.
This tour is perfect for anyone eager to witness the breathtaking beauty of the glacier. Your adventure begins with a brisk 30-minute walk from the parking area to the ice, allowing you to get your blood flowing and prepare for the climb ahead. Note that the glacier has receded further due to warming temperatures, making this trek more memorable.
Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull, one of Europe’s largest glaciers. It gained recognition in the 2012 documentary “Chasing Ice,” which explores the impact of climate change. As you reach the ice, take a moment to appreciate the serene sounds of the glacier and the sense of isolation that envelops you in this vast icy landscape. You’ll have the chance to behold the striking blue ice, formed over millennia as snow compresses into solid ice, trapping bubbles of oxygen.
Important Tips:
For the best experience, please remember to wear warm, waterproof clothing, and bring thick socks and gloves. Nature is best enjoyed when you’re comfortable and worry-free!
