Bubbling Sands Snorkeling Tour in Iceland

Discover one of Iceland’s hidden gems on the Bubbling Sands Snorkeling Tour in Litlaá, also known as the “Little River.” Located near the northern coast of Iceland, just south of the Arctic Circle, this geothermal river offers a unique snorkeling adventure unlike anywhere else in the country.

Litlaá was formed in 1976 after the Krafla volcanic eruptions. Warm geothermal springs mix with colder water from nearby Lake Skjálftavatn, creating a comfortable snorkeling temperature of 12–17°C year-round. Unlike most rivers in Iceland, Litlaá is shallow with a gentle current, more like a lagoon, making it safe and enjoyable for snorkelers of all levels.

What makes this river truly magical are the bubbling volcanic sands at the bottom. Heated water rises through the sediments, creating mesmerizing patterns and ripples beneath you as you float along. Mixed with the sands are bright green algae fields and abundant snails, which have earned the lagoon the nickname “Snail Lagoon.” Litlaá is also one of Iceland’s top trout rivers, so you may spot fish gliding through the clear waters.

This adventure is part of the famous Diamond Circle sightseeing route, just 30 minutes from Húsavík (Iceland’s whale-watching capital) and close to Ásbyrgi Canyon. Whether you love nature, geology, or photography, this excursion offers unforgettable experiences.

Goðafoss Waterfall

Our first stop on the Myvatn Tour from Akureyri is the spectacular Goðafoss Waterfall, known as the “Waterfall of the Gods.” Here, glacial waters plunge 12 meters into the river below, surrounded by dramatic basalt cliffs. It’s one of Iceland’s most famous and most photographed waterfalls.

Lake Mývatn & Pseudo-Craters

The lake is ringed with the unique Skútustaðagígar pseudo-craters, formed when lava met wetlands and exploded with steam. Today, these crater-like formations are covered with grass and often used for sheep grazing. Lake Mývatn is also renowned for its birdlife, with rare ducks and geese thriving here.

Dimmuborgir Lava Fields

Continuing the Myvatn Tour from Akureyri, we explore Dimmuborgir, a labyrinth of towering lava formations. Unlike most moss-covered lava plains, Dimmuborgir features gothic arches, caves, and dramatic shapes that look almost man-made. Walking paths allow visitors to experience this volcanic wonder up close.

Hverir Geothermal Area

The tour concludes at the Hverir geothermal area near Námaskarð Pass. Boiling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and colorful mineral deposits create a surreal, Mars-like landscape — a highlight of every Myvatn Tour from Akureyri.

Practical Information

The Lofthellir Ice Cave and Lava Tube Tour takes you on a journey of the volcanic underworld of the Lake Mývatn area. Lofthellir is a permafrost ice cave and lava tube. There you can see incredible ice formations, some hundreds of years old.

After meeting up with your guide by Lake Mývatn, you will drive along rugged tracks towards Lofthellir. You will go past the Mt. Hverfjall volcano along the Lúdentarborgir crater row. The drive takes you to Mt. Hvannfell, where you will start a 30-minute hike across the lava fields. During the hike, your guide will tell you more about the area and its unique geology. Once you reach the Lofthellir cave, you will gear up in safety equipment. You’ll also get a headlamp and studded boots to walk around more comfortably inside the ice cave.

Once inside the cave, you will travel slowly in a single line with your guide. He will guide you through the cave and help you move around safely. The entrance is the narrowest point of the cave, and you will need to crawl through here. The cave is 370 meters long, and as you get deeper into it, the cave gets bigger. Once you have entered Lofthellir, you will go on a journey of fire and ice. You will see unique ice sculptures and get plenty of time to take some fantastic photos. You will also learn more about the cave and its environment.

Please note that this tour is not recommended for those with claustrophobia. Please see this tour’s FAQ for more information about the tour.
