4-Day Þórsmörk Guided Hiking Tour

Experience the wild beauty of Iceland’s Highlands on this 4-day guided Þórsmörk hiking tour. Explore deep valleys, volcanic landscapes, moss-covered mountains and spectacular glacier views.

Þórsmörk, also known as Thorsmork, lies between three glaciers: Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull. Icelanders know the valley as a hiking paradise. Its remarkable landscape offers mountain trails, canyons, rivers, lava fields and sweeping glacier views.

Over four days, you will hike around 40 kilometres. Most days involve 4–7 hours of walking. Therefore, this adventure suits active travellers who feel comfortable with moderate to challenging mountain hikes.

Hike Through the Þórsmörk Valley

Your experienced guide will lead you through some of Þórsmörk’s most beautiful landscapes. Along the way, you will discover valleys, volcanic formations, mountain ridges and viewpoints.

You will also explore trails that reveal a quieter side of the Icelandic Highlands. Meanwhile, your guide will help you navigate the terrain and share local knowledge about the area.

Because Þórsmörk offers so many different landscapes in a relatively small area, every hiking day brings something new.

Discover Fimmvörðuháls and Volcanic Landscapes

One of the biggest highlights is the challenging hike towards Fimmvörðuháls. First, you climb through dramatic mountain terrain towards the Morinsheiði plateau.

Then, the landscape begins to reveal the effects of Iceland’s volcanic activity. You will reach the lava field from the 2010 Fimmvörðuháls eruption and see the craters Magni and Móði.

The longest hiking day includes around 1,000 metres of ascent and descent. However, the effort rewards you with remarkable views across Þórsmörk, its mountains and surrounding glaciers.

Stay in a Mountain Hut in Þórsmörk

For three nights, Básar Hut becomes your base in the valley. You will sleep in shared dormitory accommodation and use a sleeping bag.

Staying inside Þórsmörk gives you direct access to the hiking trails each morning. Moreover, you can experience the peaceful Highland surroundings after a full day on the trail.

The tour includes three breakfasts, four lunches and three dinners. You will also enjoy a celebratory barbecue with the group during your stay.

Explore Iceland with an Experienced Hiking Guide

Þórsmörk is remote, rugged and full of incredible hiking routes. An experienced and qualified guide leads the group throughout this four-day adventure.

Transport between Reykjavík and Þórsmörk is also included. As a result, you do not need to arrange your own Highland transportation.

For active travellers looking for a multi-day guided hiking tour in Iceland, this adventure offers an exceptional combination. You can experience Þórsmörk, Fimmvörðuháls, volcanic landscapes, glaciers and mountain-hut life on one journey.

3-Day Highlands & Volcanoes Tour

Join us for an unforgettable 3-Day Highlands & Volcanoes Tour in Iceland! This thrilling tour includes stops at stunning locations such as Vestmannaeyjar Island or the Westman Islands, where you can enjoy puffin watching, along with visits to Laki and Lakagígar volcanoes, Eldgjá Volcanic Canyon, Landmannalaugar, and the beautiful Icelandic Highlands. The package includes two nights at Adventure Hótel Geirland and breakfast each morning.

Day 1: Explore Vestmannaeyjar Island

On the first morning, you will be picked up from your accommodation in Reykjavík. The tour will head to the Landeyjarhöfn harbor, where you will board a ferry to Vestmannaeyjar Islands. After a scenic 45-minute ferry ride, the first stop is at Stórhöfði Cape, the southernmost tip of the main island, perfect for observing the iconic Atlantic Puffins. Following this, visit Eldheimar Museum, which commemorates the volcanic eruption of 1973 that forced the island’s residents to evacuate. After the museum, hike up Mt. Eldfell or explore the town before returning to the mainland in the afternoon.

Once back, you will travel along the South Coast and enjoy views of notable sites including Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, and Mt. Eyjafjallajökull, which erupted in 2010, disrupting air traffic across Europe and North America. Your day concludes at the picturesque coastal village of Vík, where you can relax and explore before heading to your hotel for the night.

Day 2: Majestic Landscapes of the East

After breakfast, your adventure begins at the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. Hiking alongside the canyon feels like stepping into a fairy tale. The journey then continues into the pristine area of Laki and Lakagígar, part of Vatnajökull National Park. Once at Mt. Laki, hike to the summit for stunning views of the landscape and the historic Lakagígar craters formed during one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history from 1783-1784. This eruption significantly impacted Europe, leading to a famine that contributed to the French Revolution.

You will make short stops along the highlands before arriving in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, where you have free time to explore** Systrafoss Waterfall**, Systrastapi Rock, or the fascinating Kirkjugólf (Church Floor) made of row upon row of basalt columns. Afterward, return to your hotel for the night.

Day 3: Adventure in the Highlands

On your final day, you’ll enjoy breakfast, check out of the hotel, and begin your return journey to Reykjavík. However, you’ll take the scenic Fjallabaksleið Nyrðri road, stopping first at Eldgjá Canyon, the largest volcanic canyon in the world, spanning about 40 kilometers. Here, you’ll hike to experience Ófærufoss Waterfall.

Next, head to Landmannalaugar, a spectacular highlands paradise known for its multicolored rhyolite mountains. You can explore the lava fields of Laugahraun, hike Mt. Brennisteinsalda, or soak in the natural geothermal pool.

After enjoying a couple of hours in Landmannalaugar, your journey back to Reykjavík continues with a brief stop at Hjálparfoss Waterfall in Þjórsárdalur Valley. Once back in Reykjavík in the evening, you will be dropped off at your chosen location.

Preparing for Your Adventure

Please remember to bring warm outdoor clothing, a waterproof jacket and pants, headwear, gloves, and swimsuits for the geothermal springs. Good hiking shoes are also recommended. Please note that meals are not included in the tour, except for breakfast.

Book your 3-Day Highlands, Volcanoes & Westman Islands Adventure today for a thrilling experience in the stunning landscapes of Iceland!

Private Thorsmork Valley Tour from Reykjavik

Explore one of Iceland’s most spectacular wilderness areas on a Private Thorsmork Tour from Reykjavik. Travel beyond the usual South Coast route with your own professional driver-guide and discover a remote valley surrounded by glaciers, mountains and powerful glacial rivers.

Þórsmörk, meaning “Thor’s Valley,” takes its name from Þór, the Norse god of thunder. The protected valley is known for its dramatic scenery, surprisingly rich vegetation and rugged landscapes shaped by glaciers and volcanic activity.

Reaching Þórsmörk is part of the adventure. Your specially equipped vehicle travels across rough terrain and through rivers that ordinary rental cars cannot safely access.

Seljalandsfoss and Gígjökull Glacier

Your private adventure begins with pickup directly from your Reykjavík accommodation.

Travel along Iceland’s South Coast to Seljalandsfoss, one of the country’s most recognisable waterfalls. Here, water drops from the former sea cliffs into the landscape below.

From there, leave the main road behind and continue deeper into the Icelandic wilderness.

The journey takes you towards Gígjökull, an outlet glacier extending from Eyjafjallajökull. Enjoy views of the glacier and the dramatic landscape created by ice, rivers and volcanic forces.

Discover the Valley of Thor

Continue into magnificent Þórsmörk, surrounded by rugged mountains and glaciers.

The glacial river Krossá winds through the valley, while sheltered areas support moss, flowers and vegetation that contrast beautifully with the surrounding highland landscape.

Because this is a private tour, you can enjoy a more personal experience with your own driver-guide and private transportation. It is an excellent way to discover one of Iceland’s less-travelled regions away from the busiest sightseeing routes.

After exploring Þórsmörk, begin the journey back through the South Coast landscapes before returning to your accommodation in Reykjavík.

The Private Thorsmork Tour from Reykjavik takes approximately 10 hours and combines waterfalls, glaciers, river crossings and remote Icelandic wilderness in one memorable day.

This 6-hour small-group adventure also gives you the chance to enjoy some hiking or simply experience the scenery from the comfort of the Super Jeep.

Explore Þórsmörk by Super Jeep

One of the highlights is crossing unbridged glacial rivers in a specially equipped 4×4 vehicle. Therefore, the journey itself becomes part of the adventure.

Discover the Valley Between Three Glaciers

Þórsmörk sits between three glaciers: Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull.

This unique location creates a landscape of mountains, valleys, rivers and glacier views.

Along the way, you can also see signs of how the Eyjafjallajökull eruption changed the surrounding landscape.

Your local guide will help you discover the area while sharing knowledge about this remarkable part of South Iceland.

Depending on the experience and conditions, you can enjoy some hiking and explore the landscape on foot. Alternatively, you can take in the scenery while enjoying the Super Jeep adventure.

Small group sizes allow for more personal guidance throughout the tour.

Lunch in Þórsmörk

A light lunch at one of the huts in Þórsmörk is included in the tour.

However, South Coast Adventure recommends bringing some extra snacks with you for the day.

After exploring Þórsmörk, travel back across the rugged landscape and glacial rivers towards Brú Base Camp.

A Super Jeep Adventure in South Iceland

The Þórsmörk Super Jeep Tour takes approximately 6 hours and has a Moderate difficulty rating.

The tour operates in different weather conditions, so warm layers and waterproof clothing are essential. Good hiking shoes or hiking boots are also required.

Overall, this adventure combines Super Jeep driving, glacial river crossings, hiking and the wild landscapes of Þórsmörk in one unforgettable South Iceland experience.

Inside the Volcano Iceland – Þríhnúkagígur

Journey into the heart of a dormant Icelandic volcano on the extraordinary Inside the Volcano Iceland tour at Þríhnúkagígur. Hike across a dramatic lava field before descending 120 metres (400 feet) into an enormous volcanic chamber hidden beneath the surface.

Instead of looking into a crater from above, you’ll enter the volcano itself using an open cable lift operated by experienced professionals.

The complete experience takes approximately 6 hours with transfers from Reykjavík, including the hike, volcano descent and time inside the remarkable magma chamber.

Hike Across an Icelandic Lava Field

After arriving at the meeting point in the mountains, set off with your guide across the lava field towards Þríhnúkagígur.

The hike is approximately 3.5 km (2 miles) each way and normally takes around 45–50 minutes in each direction.

The terrain is generally manageable but uneven, and weather conditions can make the hike more challenging. The final section includes an elevation gain of approximately 50 metres before reaching the volcano.

Descend 120 Metres Into Þríhnúkagígur

At basecamp, your guides provide a safety briefing and prepare you with the necessary equipment before you walk to the crater.

Then step aboard the open cable lift for an unforgettable approximately 7-minute descent, 120 metres beneath the surface.

Inside, discover the immense volcanic chamber and its extraordinary rock formations and colours — a perspective of Iceland’s volcanic geology that few experiences can match.

You’ll spend approximately 30 minutes at the bottom of the volcano, with expert guides available to explain the chamber and answer questions.

Icelandic Soup at Basecamp

After returning to the surface, warm up at basecamp with complimentary traditional Icelandic lamb soup, or choose a vegetable/vegan alternative.

Coffee, tea and hot chocolate are also available before you begin the guided hike back across the lava field.

The temperature inside the crater remains around 3°C (37°F), so warm outdoor clothing and good hiking footwear are essential even when the weather in Reykjavík is pleasant.
