Explore Iceland’s frozen wilderness on a Sólheimajökull Glacier Hike and Ice Climbing Tour. Join a certified glacier guide for an exciting small-group adventure on one of South Iceland’s most impressive glaciers.

The experience combines glacier hiking with optional introductory ice climbing. No previous ice-climbing experience is required. Therefore, this tour is a great choice for active travellers who want to experience Iceland’s ice up close.

The adventure takes approximately 5.5 hours and has a moderate difficulty rating.

Explore Sólheimajökull Glacier

Meet your certified guide at the Sólheimajökull Glacier parking lot. First, your guide will provide the necessary glacier equipment and explain how to use it.

Next, you will receive a thorough safety briefing. Then, begin the hike towards the glacier while enjoying views of Sólheimajökull and the surrounding landscape.

Once you reach the ice, explore a fascinating frozen world. Discover deep crevasses, ice ridges, moulins and beautiful blue ice formations along the way.

Your guide will also explain the glacier’s geology and changing nature. As a result, you will experience the glacier while learning more about the forces that continue to shape it.

Try Ice Climbing

During the tour, your guide will find a suitable ice wall for an introduction to ice climbing.

First, you will learn basic climbing techniques and how to use the specialised equipment. Afterwards, you can put those skills into practice and try climbing the ice yourself.

Ice climbing is optional, so you can still enjoy the glacier adventure if you prefer not to climb. In addition, you do not need previous ice-climbing experience to participate.

A Small-Group Glacier Adventure

The small-group format gives you more time with your glacier guide. It also creates a more personal experience while exploring Sólheimajökull.

However, you should come prepared for an active adventure. The tour can involve up to 8 km of hiking across uneven terrain with moderate elevation changes.

You must wear sturdy hiking boots with ankle support. You also need a shoe size between EU 35 and EU 50 so the specialised glacier crampons fit correctly.

Overall, the Sólheimajökull Glacier Hike and Ice Climbing Tour combines glacier exploration, spectacular scenery and optional ice climbing in one memorable South Iceland adventure.
