On this Amazing adventure tour we take you to Thjórsárdalur valley which is the easternmost valley of Árnessýsla in South Iceland. This tour offers a unique combination of landscape diversity and historic sites. The valley is lush and contains amazing natural and cultural attractions.
Thjórsárdalur is the home of Hekla which is one of Iceland’s most famous and active volcanos with over 20 eruptions since the settlement. Hekla has produced one of the largest amounts of lava of every volcano in the world, last time it erupted was in the year of 2000.
Our first stop on this tour is Hjálparfoss waterfall which is a pretty unique double waterfall that is joined at its base into a very large plunge pool.
Next stop is Thjóðveldisbærinn Stöng a reconstructed Viking turf house based on the ruins of the old manor farm Stöng. From there we go to the actual ruins of Stöng which is considered to have been abandoned after its destruction in the Hekla eruption the year 1104.
From there we head to Gjáin which is one of the hidden treasures of Iceland, this is one of the most beautiful places in Iceland, if you are a Game of Thrones fan then this is a must 🙂
From the breathtaking landscape of Gjáin we drive up a mountain to see the amazing Háifoss which is the second highest waterfall in Iceland 122 meters high, next to Háifoss is the waterfall Granni (Neighbor) this pair of waterfalls are one of the most stunning sights you will see in Iceland.
On our way back we will drive between the mountains Hekla and Búrfell to the beautiful waterfall Þjófafoss (Waterfall of thieves) there the Vikings would drown thieves by binding their hands and feet and throwing them into the falls from a high cliff.
After this adventure we will drive the South Coast back to Reykjavík.
