May - October
This tour is a great option for those who’d like to go on the Inside the Volcano tour but skip the hike. By combining a scenic helicopter transfer and the Inside the Volcano tour, you can enjoy two of Reykjavík’s best excursions in one tour! Departing from Reykjavík, you will fly above the city to the dormant Þríhnjúgagíkur crater. During the flight, you can enjoy views over Iceland’s colorful capital.
Next, you will land by the Þríhnjúkagígur crater which is located on the outskirts of Reykjavík. The regular tour includes a 2,5 km hike but by traveling with a helicopter you will land right by the crater. Note that you must walk up to the entrance of the crater which requires a reasonable level of fitness. The walk up is only a short distance, but it is steep. At the entrance, you will be lowered into the Þríhnjúkagígur crater via an open-elevator system. As you descend into the crater you will be able to take in the craters stunning natural features. Once you reach the ground you will be able to walk around and take photos. Once back on the surface, the helicopter will fly you back to Reykjavík.
Please note that coffee and refreshments are offered to guests who hike up to Þríhnjúkagígur. On the helicopter tour, there may not be time for refreshments.
