The Blue Ice Cave & Glacier Hike Tour

This tour combines the best of Skaftafell; a glacier hike and a visit to a blue ice cave! Departing from Skaftafell, this tour takes you on a glacier hike on one of Vatnajökull’s glacier tounges. Vatnajökull is Europe’s largest glacier, and surrounding it is Iceland’s highest mountain range. Iceland’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur, is located in this area.

After meeting up with your group and guide, you’ll gear up with the appropriate safety equipment and get a safety briefing. Don’t worry if this is your first time glacier hiking, your guide will show you how to use crampons and other safety equipment. Next, you’ll be taken to the edge of the icecap from where you’ll start your hike to the blue ice cave. Along the way you’ll be able to enjoy the stunning scenery that surrounds you. During the hike, you’ll see ice formations and moulins in the glacier. You’ll also learn about the glaciers, how they form and are constantly changing.

Once you reach the blue ice cave you’ll be able to walk inside this beautiful natural structure and take plenty of pictures. Ice caves are a natural phenomenon and are constantly changing. As a result, each tour is a unique experience. After your visit, you’ll hike back to the ice cap’s edge from where you’ll return to Skaftafell.
